She is the city in Israel with the brightest and richest sun my eyes have ever seen. She sits in the middle east permeating sweet scents of spices and herbs throughout her narrow stone streets. She is covered in prayer. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit float around her like holy feathers. She is the location of ancient foundational stories of the creation of man. Her roads are well traveled by people of all color and cultures as they pilgrimage about seeking an understanding of our God who is sovereign and just. A God who favors her so much that He made eternal promises to her nation of Israel. She is a touch stone in the hearts of men/women who love God and His son Jesus Christ. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. Isaiah 60:3 And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. Genesis 12:3 These verses are among many on the legitimacy of Israel in the heart of God. As gentiles first were preached to by Jewish leaders (Romans 15:27) it is to them I owe awareness of their stance in God’s heart. I support her right to defend that stance. Jerusalem. She is surrounded by enemies who seek to destroy her. She is heavy hearted in exasperation over the possibilities of denial from her beloved ally, America. Her survival does NOT depend on me but a radical leaving her side has consequences. My survival is contingent on God, who loves and favors her. Israel houses Jerusalem. Abraham, the father of Jacob (Israel), was given the promise that affects us all. Why on earth would we turn our backs on such promises to the place of origination of the Kingdom family of God? God’s promises to Israel were not replaced by salvation through Christ. As the truth of salvation in Christ stands, so do His promises stand. As a deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul thirsts for God, for the living God; when shall I come and appear before God? Psalm 42:1. The American elk, the deer in this piece is me. It is you, the believer. America is a nation unraveling our biblical foundation. Are we facing a divine drought? The elk’s antlers expand up and out in all directions seeking out possibilities within our reach. His antlers stretch to the seven mountains. The goal is NOT to dominate or dictate these mountains, but to assert what was stolen by a culture who seeks to eliminate a God who gave us our culture in the first place. The heartbeats of a culture are arts, education, government, religion, media, family, economy. To thrive in the name of Jesus Christ is a desire that should fuel the very essence of our hearts. The canvas this piece was created on are real bible pages. They are turned upside down representing the twisting and turning we as a nation have done to the written word of God. His forehead sports a tattoo from centuries ago in Jerusalem depicting the abode of the divine. His hand is marked with the cross from the arms of Jerusalem . The same hand easily holds his sword to his heart. Is he lax or ready to charge? The draping below his obvious American flag cloak is the Appeal to Heaven Flag created during the revolutionary war in an attempt to ask God to come and grant freedom from the oppression. Ghost like images of wings and The Lion of Judah prevail above and behind the maverick image. Last and certainly not least, there are 3 tiny human embryos on his “sleeve of life”. Hourly wage exceeded the rest of the nation and tips were often off the charts. Therefore, one can find themselves, as I did , on the Seattle /Bremerton ferry dock pouring beer at the popular Wheelhouse Tavern or mixing drinks in plush waterfront resorts or officer’s clubs on naval bases. Serving alcohol to men with deep generous pockets was normal. The majority of consumers were kind and respectful and had ALOT of money. There were times a tip of $100 for 3 scooners of beer was not unusual. The Pacific Northwest was a version of boom town. From tin lunch box toting ship yard workers to cash carrying oil riggers returning from Alaska, to showing actor Charlton Heston how the updated shot measuring system operated, tending bar was a sought after position. So there I was . However, 12 years in I was at a crossroad of conviction. I became a mom. My morals and conscience was nagging and tugging at my heart . Going to work was a dread. I was a fairly new believer in Christ. I was raw and ignorant in my biblical understanding. No, this article is not meant to slam bartenders or drinking. This is my story. The day was Pastor Appreciation Day! All the restaurants were on overload. My particular restaurant was full capacity. The hostess was seating large groups of pastors in the bar. I was the main bartender on duty. And there he was, my own pastor! Right there bigger than life! My body trembled and my face hurt. The thought of him seeing me glide across the floor carrying a tray of alcoholic beverages was excruciating. The sole environment he had seen me in was walking my 2 babies into Sunday School. Adding to my demise in walked a group of 4 very large flannel shirts, jeans and big hands. These were obviously “hardcore blue collar laboring very large men with a thirst for lots of beer”. To reach these men I had to travel through the ocean of pastors. I felt like the women ready to be stoned. Now keep in mind, I was the one with the problem. This was a case of self condemnation. It was like parting the red sea to get through the pastors and reach the table of 4 very large thirsty iron workers. I grabbed my tray, grasped my courage and approached the table of 4. “ What can I get you gentlemen?” I asked “ Four coffees please.” One replied. My heart shifted allowing room for me to breath again. I poured the coffees. I took their food order. I delivered the food. All the while my pastors just smiled. Returning the smile I said good afternoon. They smiled back and all was well. I was free. Here is the miracle that happened that day. I glanced over to the 4 flannel shirts. To my amazement, those 8 large hands joined and prayed over their food. I think I was staring. I walked away for 2 minutes. I glanced back again. All that remained was a pile of cash on the table, 4 large empty plates , the plaid flannel shirts with the men attached to them were gone. I asked the hostess and several waitresses where they went. They replied …….WHO? I said the 4 huge men at that table. They had not seen them at all. No one had. They were angels. A sweep of holy fire rushed clean to the depths of my soul. Though I don’t look at it often, the previous meaning is extracted as a new one steps in. I suppose you can say in sorts, it breaths. I wont get into detail of it’s past meaning other than I created this as an offering of hope at an event in front of 1000s during Christmas in 2010. It later made it’s way to a home of which I am pleased and that is good. I tend to be more excited about the process of my work than the actual final outcome. The background music, environment and excitement of the idea plays a more valid roll than the final piece. The shiny smooth wet paint all over my hands and the scent of the oil certainly contributes to the excitement of creating. However, in the end I have a sense of disappointment that the work is complete. I grieve for about 5 minutes and move on. Did God experience the same let down as He created the universe and all that is in it. When creating was over did He step back and say “ Now what?” Did He wash His hands as quickly as I do and forget about His work? The answer is NO. For God, we are the excitement. In all He created, in all He made, the stars and universe and galaxy and waters and mountains and wildlife , in all His wisdom and perfection He loves us most. In all His glory He creates each one of us as a work of art . We can be assured that upon completion of creating us in the womb, His artistic investment has only begun. The master artist invests His love and faithfulness to us through out our lifetime here on earth and goes so far as to inviting us into his heavenly home for eternity. With that said , the new breath on this day to this painting is………. I will speak for myself. Each one of you has the freedom to stand on your own beliefs and shout them from your own home. And let me remind you, this is a freedom many have sacrificed their lives for. As for me and my house we will serve The Lord. I listened to Cynthia speak and I silently allowed the pouring out of her words to guide my hand and drawing tool. I have known Cynthia for many years. There was a era we performed in the same theater ensemble. We laughed a lot. We were part of a small quirky group of actors who shared the same sense of whit and the one true God. We attended Sunday School together and remained friends in heart, though years out of sight. Ours is a kinship time or distance does not destroy. Years can pass without sharing a single conversation but when that phone rings it’s as if we chatted yesterday. My friend Cynthia’s past is one of darkness and pain. Her childhood is filled with stories I could share but it is not my intent to take such liberties. Cynthia’s stories are her own. How can I put in to words the reality of it all unless I too had suffered her exact afflictions. We are called to express compassion and caring. However, unless we suffer the same we can not empathize. I can create an angel. That is what I can do. The Holy Spirit shows me the angel that objectively lives in Cynthia’s brain. The vision God sees is the angel she wants visually represented on her new creative adventure. This angel will be the visual on her spring board of artistic ideas. It is her brand, her trademark and her representation of the warriors who fought on her behalf. This angel is one in the army who battled along side a young girls pain and eliminated ( at the time) much of her childhood physical pain. God encamps us with His chosen warriors. There is an army who lifts us out of the brink of sinking sand and broken bridges and delivers us to the safety of the shore. The bridges we build, the roads we travel and destroy along the way, all lead us on a journey back to living again! She first came to me as a student when she was approaching 6. My studio doors opened and in walked a little girl with a calm yet eager stance and a willingness to go for it. Hannah was diagnosed and survived a form of cancer (Leukemia) at the age of 5. The effects of the intense treatments left her with neurological damage in her hands resulting in motor skill difficulties often making it hard to release the grip from the brush. Is this an obstacle when learning to paint and draw? Absolutely not ! Hannah’s positive nature allows her to see things different than most. Raised by her grandma and grandpa, Hannah has a survivor’s spirit instilled by what I call “a good old dose of old school thinking.” I am a left brain creative , she is a right. She sees life through the distinctive eyes and heart of a young women who loves everything from Johnny Cash and WW2 veterans to ironic quick witted statements. Her paint strokes go off to the left when I say right. Her lines go straight when I direct them to swing and sway. Now this is all art talk but let me explain. Art is NOT to be sheltered in a box where we tend to think we store God as well. Many artists can relate when I say there is a need in us to tap our right side of the brain. We don’t get enough of it. Contrast and value are terms that are at the discretion of the artist or the exactness of the subject. That’s what makes art quirky and wild and wonderful. It is in those moments of creation we truly melt to the likelihood of what you see is not necessarily what the artist intended. All I knew was this little vibrant soul named Hannah had an uninhibited drive to create, and she was gonna challenge the creative nature of who I was as a teacher. When Jesus tells us to do something, He rarely gives us a stencil or cut out step by step method. He liberates us to examine and experience the art within the guidance of The Holy Spirit. This is how I approach all my students. Now keep in mind, yes there are staples in art that are elements that are fact and help us grow in skill and excellence, but never, and I do say never to all teachers out there, never assume your students are cut from a mold. Each one is like a snowflake . The same but different. As Hannah grew and we developed a solid teacher student trust I saw before me a mature young women who I invested in. We are like a bank. We deposit and we withdraw. We pay out and we take in. What is the nature of your investments? Who is your source? What do your investments gain and how are you spending the profit?
