Going Back
Over 5 decades of doing art professionally, taking on clients, book covers and teaching art history, I yearned to return to my first artist’s love. Charcoal! The subjects of this collection are a taste of where I fell in love with charcoal. While attending Northwest College of Art in Poulsbo WA in the 1980’s and residing in a tiny cabin on Chico Creek in Bremerton WA, a passion for high contrast overwhelmed my artist’s soul. With a husband and 2 very small children I managed to graduate. At the time, NW College of ART was back in the day of old school production on a drawing board, dark room film developing, going to the library and writing letters to the appropriate source for copyright laws then awaiting weeks for a response. It taught me mixed media, hands on process, tools of the trade, art history, contrast and style, patience and skill.
This custom hand designed and crafted collection includes seven blank greeting cards and 7 simple statements depicting much of the old history of the Pacific Northwest. A few of the images were inspired by old photographs and changed at least 35% to avoid copyright issues of the time. Example: the female image was inspired by an Edward S Curtis photograph.
Living and working in North Carolina has been my home for many years. I never forgot where it all started. I finally have the time to follow this simple dream and embrace the first love of my craft. I had forgotten how I love sitting at my easel with charcoal sticks, charcoal powder, dirty hands and charcoal everywhere.
The process is messy but that is what I love about it.
